Digital Terrain Modeling

The foundation of every engineering design starts with an accurate terrain model. We produce high-precision digital terrain models (DTMs) and digital surface models (DSMs) from drone LiDAR and photogrammetry data — delivering the contours, surfaces, and elevation grids your design team needs.

DTM vs. DSM — What's the Difference?

Understanding these three terrain products helps you order exactly what your project needs.

Digital Terrain Model (DTM)

Represents the bare ground surface only — all vegetation, buildings, and objects removed. Includes breaklines along ridges, valleys, and slope changes for accurate surface representation. The go-to product for civil engineering design, grading plans, and earthworks.

Digital Surface Model (DSM)

Represents the top of everything — ground, vegetation, buildings, vehicles, and all objects. Useful for canopy analysis, line-of-sight studies, viewshed analysis, and understanding what's actually on the surface.

Slope & Aspect Mapping

Derived from DTMs and DSMs, slope and aspect maps quantify the steepness and orientation of every point on your terrain. Essential for site grading design, erosion risk assessment, solar exposure analysis, and drainage planning — helping engineers and planners make informed decisions about land use and development.

Contour Maps

Generated from DTMs using AI-optimized interpolation at any interval you need — 0.1m, 0.25m, 0.5m, 1m, or custom. Delivered as smooth, clean contour lines in DWG/DXF or shapefile format, ready for your CAD or GIS environment.

Where Terrain Models Are Essential

Civil Engineering

Site grading design, road alignments, stormwater modelling, and cut/fill optimization. DTMs are the starting point for every civil engineering project.

Mining Operations

Pit design verification, reclamation surface planning, haul road grades, and as-built comparison against design surfaces for ongoing mine management.

Hydrology & Flood Modelling

High-accuracy DEMs are the core input for watershed delineation, flood extent modelling, drainage analysis, and stormwater management studies.

Land Development

Subdivision planning, building footprint placement, grading and servicing design, and municipal development permit applications.

Terrain Modeling FAQ

LiDAR or photogrammetry — which is better for terrain models?

If your site has significant vegetation — trees, brush, tall grass — LiDAR is the clear choice because it penetrates canopy to reach the ground. On open, bare-earth sites like construction pads, gravel pits, or cleared land, photogrammetry produces excellent terrain models at lower cost. We'll recommend the right approach based on your site conditions and accuracy requirements.

What contour interval can you achieve?

With survey-grade accuracy of ±2–5 cm vertical, we can confidently produce contours down to 10 cm intervals. Standard engineering contour deliverables are typically 0.25m or 0.5m. The appropriate interval depends on your project's design requirements — we'll discuss this during scoping.

Can you match an existing survey control network?

Absolutely. We tie into your existing ground control points, survey monuments, or project benchmarks to ensure our terrain model aligns seamlessly with your established survey control network. This is critical for projects where our data will be used alongside existing survey or design surfaces.
